Artist Statement
My work is driven by instinct, memory, rhythm, and the urge to make a mark. I build paintings through neon color, repeated symbols, layered imagery, and loose gestures, allowing each composition to develop through the process rather than following a fixed plan.
Graffiti, graphic design, music, and the visual culture I grew up around continue to shape the way I see and make work. I am interested in how familiar colors, marks, symbols, and fragments of memory can be pulled apart, repeated, distorted, and turned into a visual language of their own.
There is structure in the work, but there is also spontaneity. I rarely know exactly where a painting will end when I begin. That tension between control and discovery is an important part of my practice.
Ultimately, I am interested in making work that feels immediate and personal—work with rhythm, confidence, movement, and enough openness for viewers to find their own connections within it.
Bio
xaviergray is an Indianapolis-based contemporary artist working across painting, public art, and digital media. His work is known for bold color, layered compositions, repeated symbols, and an intuitive approach that draws from graffiti, graphic design, music, and visual culture.
Working primarily with spray paint and acrylic, xaviergray creates energetic compositions that balance structure and spontaneity. His current body of work, VANDAL NOSTALGIA, explores the lasting influence of childhood memory and the visual and cultural references that shaped his creative identity.
The name xaviergray combines his children's middle names and reflects the role that personal history, family, and legacy continue to play within his practice.
xaviergray was named 2025 Summit Artist of the Year at Art Comes Alive through ADC Fine Art Gallery. His work and creative collaborations have included projects with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, TAG Heuer, NCAA, Horizon League, and City of Fishers.
